Title I

What is Title I?
Title I is the largest federal aid program for schools. It serves millions of children in elementary and secondary schools each year. Through Title I, the Federal government gives money to school districts nationwide based on the number of low-income families in each district. Each district uses its Title I money for extra educational services for children experiencing difficulty with reading and/or mathematics so that they may succeed in the regular classroom.

The two primary objectives of the Title 1 program are to improve student achievement for all participating children and to improve parental and community involvement. The Title 1 grant promotes family engagement and home-school partnerships through various outreach events.

The Devens, English, Keverian, Lafayette, Parlin, Webster, and Whittier are designated Title I Schools. The programs are school-wide Title I programs, meaning all students are part of the Title I program. For the 2024-2025 school year, the Title I program funds family liaisons and before and after-school tutoring programs in reading and math.

What role can families play?
Families are a vital part of the Title I program and are urged to participate through membership in the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), service on School Councils, classroom visits, participation in informational programs, parent training workshops, and parent/teacher conferences.
