CKLA and iReady Training for first-grade teachers, hosted by the Whittier School.
ELA and ESL teachers engage in a modeling activity during a session on Strategies for Reading Complex Text led by WriteBoston. During this exercise, teachers rotated partners with the aim of developing more refined and stronger summaries of a text they had read.
Let’s just say it: The EPS started the year off on the right note! Pictured above, music teachers are shown as part of the professional development session they attended at Everett High School.
EPS middle school ELA teachers participated in an engaging session entitled ‘Connecting Webb's Depth of Knowledge Amplify ELA.’ The session was run by Instructional Coach Ben Francavilla. In addition to learning how to make classroom work more rigorous for students, teachers were given time to collaborate and plan a week's worth of lessons applying the concepts reviewed by Mr. Francavilla.

Something Worth Sharing
Productive Struggle
You may think the term “productive struggle” is an oxymoron, but when used properly it can make a world of difference in what our students achieve. We want to go beyond giving our students the correct answer; we want them to get to that answer on their own. That does not mean we are not there for our students to provide encouragement and necessary scaffolds. It just means we believe our students are capable. Productive struggle helps students to develop strong habits of the mind including perseverance, active learning and flexible thinking. I encourage you to read and reflect on the article, What is Productive Struggle? from the University of San Diego.
