Choral Response (Call and Response)
Let's Get Students Talking!
What is it?
Choral responses or Call and Response involve all students responding verbally to the teacher’s signal. They are used when answers are short and the same when recall and rehearsal of facts are desired, and for quick information review. Choral responses can be used throughout all components of an explicit lesson to increase engagement and check for understanding. Why is it important? It is a method for providing additional practice of key vocabulary words and academic concepts by supporting students with oral rehearsal. It is a quick method for checking for understanding from the whole class and immediately supporting student engagement.

How to use it?
Lemov from Teach Like a Champion suggests these four ways to use the strategy:

Review of information: The class repeats what the teacher said, therefore reviewing the concept or reinforcing the answering behavior:  i.e. “George Washington was the first president of the United States.  Class, who was the first president of the United States?”

Class: “George Washington.”

Reinforce: You reinforce new information or a strong answer by asking the class to repeat it.  “Jonathon, please tell us what this part of the expression is called.” Jonathon: “Exponent.”  Teacher: “Excellent.  Class, what is this part of the expression called?” “Exponent.”

Review: Call and response can be used to review material covered earlier. "Yesterday, class, we talked about exponents. What did we talk about yesterday?” Class “Exponents.”

Solve: The teacher asks the class to solve a problem and call out the answer in unison.”  If the length of our rectangle is ten inches, and the width is twelve inches, what is the area of the rectangle? ” Class:  “120 square inches.”  “How many?”  “120 inches!”

ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE
Everett teachers Megan O’Donnell, Janet Colameta, Kim Auger, Melissa O’Donnell, Stacy Schiavo, and Carol DeMagistris are pictured with Superintendent William Hart during the Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 4, 2024. Smartly, and not surprisingly, the teachers found an ideal spot at the corner of Chelsea and Spring streets, where they cheered on the Everett High School students as they made their way to Veterans Memorial Stadium.
